Erosion Control Products

Erosion refers to the process where soil and rock are worn away from the Earth’s surface, often through natural elements, such as water, wind or ice, and are then transported to and deposited in other locations.

Erosion Control Products

Although erosion is a natural process, human activity, such as intensive agricultural methods, has accelerated the rate of soil erosion globally. This has meant the need for erosion control products, such as coconut fibre mat and grass, has greatly increased, especially over the last 25 years.

According to the United Nations Environment Programme, 24 percent of the global land area has declined in productivity over the past 25 years due to unsustainable land-use, so almost 1% of land per year has eroded at a fast rate, which is shocking to hear. UNEP points to various assessments indicating that some kinds of intensive agriculture are triggering soil erosion at rates that are about 100 times greater than the rates at which nature can form soil. Other studies on soil erosion also suggest that increased rainfall will lead to greater rates of erosion. Therefore, unless preventive measures are taken, soil erosion can have serious negative implications on the future of our planet.

What is Erosion Control?

Erosion control is the practice of preventing or controlling wind or water erosion in agriculture, land development and construction. This usually involves the creation of some sort of physical barrier, such as vegetation or rock, to absorb the energy that is causing erosion. Effective erosion control measures, such as geotextiles, coirlogs, and coir pallets, are vital to prevent water pollution and soil loss.

What Can I Do?

Now is the time to act properly and invest in the correct products for controlling the effects of erosion. CoirGreen® manufactures the following environmentally-friendly erosion control products using natural coir fiber and its extracts as raw material:

“If we did not take action to solve this[Environment] crisis, it could indeed threaten the future of human civilization. That sounds shrill. It sounds hard to accept. I believe it’s deadly accurate. But again, we can solve it.”
– Al Gore, speaking during an interview with CNN in 2006
