The World Environment Day, which falls on June 5th each year, is the United Nations day for promoting awareness and motivating actions to protect our environment. Since its inception in 1974, this commemoration is one that has grown out to become a transformational, global platform for public outreach, that is today, celebrated in over 100 countries.
The World Environment Day is first and foremost the ‘people’s day’ for starting a chain reaction or taking actions that will help give back to our planet. This action could either be local, national or global. It could also be something that is carried out in the privacy of a household or a backyard or something that involves the contribution of a community. Everyone is free to choose how and what they would want to do to take care of Mother Nature.
Each year, the day is celebrated along a theme that has been determined. This year’s theme is air pollution. The themes help draw attention to various critical dilemmas the world faces today as a direct and indirect result of our actions, that has steadily assaulted the stability of our eco-systems.
This year’s host for the World Environment Day is China. Each year a country plays host to the event where all the official celebrations will be held. The focus on the host country also helps emphasise the environmental challenges that the country is facing and thereby draws in global support to address them.
This year’s theme, air pollution, is a blatant statement and a call to action for every human being on earth. Approximately 7 million people around the world die each year, prematurely, due to air pollution with about 4 million of these untimely deaths occurring in the Asia – Pacific region. The World Environment Day 2019 urges people, governments, industries, and communities to explore the use of renewable energy and green technologies, to improve the air quality in many cities and regions across the globe. 92% of people around the world do not breathe clean air. Air pollution also costs the global economy a staggering $5 trillion each year, in welfare costs alone. Furthermore, ground level ozone pollution is expected to reduce stable crop yields by 26% by the year 2030.
Considering all of the above factors, it is safe to say that the time for action was somewhere in the past. But, we are not too late yet. If we all work together to use green products and technologies, we can still survive and help our planet do the same too, for without her, we are homeless.
